The mantra for good make-up is “Highlight your natural assets”
Make-up gurus would tell you to always draw attention away from your flaws and add more Oomph to your best features. Basically, spend maximum time on your plus points to make them stand out even more.
I know some of you are thinking, “But shouldn’t I pay attention to my flaws? I spend most of my time covering up my nasty pores…which is some heavy work” Sigh…
Hmmm…a common belief. Well, that’s one way to look at it. But think about this :
You can’t really change those small eyes that you were born with. Or do anything about those protruding ears.
So I asked myself, is it wise spending all those frigging hours trying to correct the ‘flawed features’ and getting nowhere?
Absolutely not. Chuck those “imperfections”, yaar.
Your asset, their Envy:
What is something that you have, which everyone is hella jealous about?
Is you sister jealous of your dimple? Does your boyfriend always compliment your pearly smile? Does your silky straight hair invoke the Satan in your enemy?
Think about it. I bet you came up with at least a couple of examples of your own.You do have beautiful features, you have a beautiful countenance, you have something that everyone envies you for. Make THAT feature your BFF.

The Mirror Psychology:
What do you get when you mix 2 parts of Make-up and 1 part of psychology ?
A new form of therapy, of course!
So there’s this thing called Affirmations [go on, look it up] which is basically a habit that we can cultivate. You choose to keep your focus on the positives in your life. With affirmations, you reassure yourself with positive thoughts, positive words and positive actions. It’s pretty much positive everything.
When you feel depressed, lonely, out of place or even plain blue, affirmations come in really handy. The trick about affirmations is that you have to keep giving them to yourself consistently. Everyday, and if possible at the same time, everyday.
Uggghhh. The bitter truth about affirmations is I hated listening to the cloying voice of a lady telling me stuff like ‘I love myself’ and ‘I am strong’ . Bleeaghhh, I despised it from the first moment. It felt so uncomfortable and it was boooring.
So I came up with my own method of affirmations – you guessed it – MAKE-UP.
According to me, make-up is a type of therapy. Psychologists say that looking at yourself, and I mean reallyyyyy observing yourself in the mirror while giving yourself positive affirmations is highly therapeutic. They encourage us to say these positive affirmations almost daily.
But how many of us observe ourselves? Even if we do, those wrinkles and the grey hairs are the only things that catch our eyes.
That’s when it came to me; I can make use of the time I spend for make-up and do the daily affirmations without being a doofus 🙂 BINGO!
The I Love Me approach:
Something that I’d like to stress on, is the way we approach make-up. There are three kinds of people. Models – period. Wellllll, can’t say much here. Let’s just leave the models alone.
The second kind are people who do make-up for the sake of it, to hide blemishes and to alter their appearance. Thirdly, the kind who use make-up to accentuate their assets. If they love their eyes, they make them prettier and forget about their high forehead.
It is a subtle version of ‘I love me’ affirmations.
Some examples of affirmations you can give yourself :
- I have beautiful almond-shaped eyes.
- I have amazing cheekbones.
- I love my chubbiness. It’s cute.
- I have the most luscious lips.
- I have a strong jawline that gives a confidence to my face structure.
I have tried this, and I see a lot of changes in my attitude. I am more confident. I am able to hold eye-contact with people(something that I couldn’t do until 5 years ago) Most importantly, I feel beautiful.
Guess make-up, isn’t that shallow after all 😛
