Behind the scenes: Toastmasters – Ovation 2016 video

“And now, I call upon ( fill in your name ) to deliver the address”

Has this line ever brought nightmares to you?

Public speaking. It can be terrifying.

But a bunch of people from an organisation called ‘Toastmasters’ are arguing otherwise. Ask Sundaresan, and he’ll tell you how thrilling it is to stand in front of an audience and deliver a speech.

Well, Sundar, my answer to you is, OF COURSE, speaking comes naturally to you! You are equal parts Toastmasters and Sales Expert – you are hardwired to talk relentlessly!

Now Jayan, who was an experienced speaker, was no stranger to us. We’ve done projects for him in the past. So we already had this good bromance-type of relationship going on with him.

It so happened that Jayan was selected as the Conference Chair for Ovation 2016 – the biggest annual event of District 82 Toastmasters. He wanted to do something creative for the revealing the event. That’s when we came into the picture – as humble video makers.

You see, until then all Ovation conferences would have videos, no doubt. But they didn’t capture the essence of Toastmasters.

“We could double up as capturers of essences”, we offered.

And there we were, Creative Partners with Toastmasters of District 82 for their annual conference.

The No.6 Rule

You deserve respect. Earn it. Stop begging for it.

Respect yourself

Life is a game…but not literally.

Love yourself first

This Golden Energy!

Enough of this wretched life…
I was blinded by them,
Handicapped by them,
Stripped of my life,
My smile,
My energy!
Orphaned by them.

Why am I
In a place that calls me a Cancer,
And not where I am a Gift?
Why am I
In a place that treats me like a Disease
And not where I am treated like a Queen?

Nine months of unrest later,
I stepped into the world with spite.
Broken in the mould,
How can I reshape to anything else?

Keep looking at the sunshine and you won’t see the shadow,

Trying to heal my previous wounds,
One, two…fifty…seventy eight…
Innumerable wounds!
I don’t want no more wounds; no new wounds.
I only want to heal and be whole.

Had my bones broken by them,
Made to believe I needed support for my back.
Took me a while,
But I realized I have a spine.
And I am my own support.

Thank you!
For without the wounds,
I couldn’t have known the medicine inside me.
All along,
Within layers of flesh, blood and mind
Deep down, a lost treasure of self-belief.

This Brilliant GOLDEN energy!
This abundant energy!
That tells me the Universe is my backbone.
The Universe supports me.

(I wrote this poem one late night when I felt the overwhelming need to do something about the hurt, betrayal and incarcerated feelings. While taking therapy has helped me slowly move away from the negativity in my life, it poses a constant threat even now. I am still looking for a permanent solution….that means there are more poems to come, so yeah! )

The awkward moment I turned into an adult

As a child, we see and experience things for what they are. We explore things, we touch, feel, sense, bite, hit and do everything possible to understand it. We take some things apart, we put other things together. We roll them down, we stare into them. We jump on them. We even trick our siblings to put it in their mouths.

Sometimes this happens not just for our first encounter with the object of interest. We do this exploration repeatedly because that becomes our reality. I will shortly tell you why I call it ‘our’ reality and not ‘the’ reality.

At that age we got no frames of references. We are not ‘experienced’. So everything is new. What happens when everything is new? We get the guttural need to explore. To experiment.

When my mother was making chapatis, she would give me a little portion of the dough. I was free to use the dough to make anything I wanted. I made cats, elephants, and a variety of other animals and objects.

Did I ever think of making chapatis out of this chapati dough? No. If you ask me, that thought never even crossed my mind. I was the maker of the great dough animals. Why would I do boring chapatis?Yet now, I use chapati dough to make nothing but chapatis.

What happened to the explorer? I obviously became an adult.
